StarEdit Utilities

StarEdit is a program included in the installation of Starcraft. This program is a campaign editor, allowing players to create their own maps to play in the game. While this is a fine editor on it’s own, there have been many advancements in the development of map making. And with new progress come new programs. We have here a collection of some of the very old and new, and of course our favorites, when it comes to editing Maps.

Before we get to the downloads part, I wanted to put up a link. People who use StarEdit who have issues getting the overlap coding to work for unit names, etc should try this generator. It’s made by Ar3sgice and FaRTy1billion. You type in what you want to overlap and it’ll give you what to copy and paste into StarEdit. The website seems to be down so here’s a download of the .html until then.

The table below has many downloads, and we’ve organized it by type and alphabetical order. We’ve given credit to those who sent in things in the past, and if we didn’t have anyone listed before we gave credit to the person who made it. We’ve also gone ahead and ranked how well we feel each item works in the Rating column.

StarEdit Mods: Not necessarily a modification of StarEdit, these programs add new features to the editor that were left out of the original. These are the most useful when it comes to making your map.

StarEdit Resources: These are files that are in-between the two categories. They may help you with making your map, but they have little to do with opening your map in a program.

StarEdit Utilities:These programs are made to add specific features to a map or change things that normally couldn’t be changed in StarEdit. But they don’t have many of the abilities that even StarEdit has such as placing units, locations, editing triggers, etc. Basically, these programs come in to play the most when you are putting the finishing touches on you map.

StarEdit Utilities and Editors

Rating Description
Emerald StarEdit * StarEdit Mod
Re][gN C This is one of the first StarEdit Mods out there. It may not even work anymore, it doesn't work for me. It adds several things to the original SE, but since it came out like a decade ago it's usefulness is fleeting.
Emerald StarEdit Patch * StarEdit Mod Patch Re][gN C It gives added features to Emerald Edit. Not sure what, I'm guessing the ability to not snap to grid. Great thing many years ago, but now it's standard on most editors.
Mac Emerald StarEdit * StarEdit Mod iYouth D The Emerald Editor for Macintosh Computers. I don't know if it works still since I don't have a Mac, and nor do most gamers.
SCM Draft 2.0.8.0 StarEdit Mod Muiffin King / Lamerok_De_Gayls A+ This one would be tied with StarForge but it's more user friendly and has less install issues. Recommended for advanced users. This is the top rated SE Utility.
Starcraft Xtra Editor StarEdit Mod PopRockzAndCoke0 B+ A great editor for beginners and advanced users. Keeps the basics but adds many useful features such as additional units, AI Scripts, Upgrade Options, etc.
StarForge 2.2 StarEdit Mod donwano & Clan[758] A Another top editor with the ability to do things most and in some cases any other editor cannot. However, many people have install issues so you may need to try other versions. I also think little of the trigger editor. Highly recommended for advanced users.
Zap Placer *
StarEdit Mod
CreepColony C+
More Useful than Emerald Editor, it allows for 255 Upgrades, more AI Scripts, etc. But this is still very outdated.
P12 Triggers StarEdit Resource
CreepColony A The more advanced editors can allow for this already, but SCXE for example still needs this. Use the Trigger Editor’s Load function to bring these triggers into your map, allowing you to create actions in triggers that affect the neutral player, player 12.
PColor 1.1 StarEdit Resource
FaRTy1billion B This neat program lets you select the tileset and unit, then put in a number 0-255 for player color and see what it looks like. The download link for this brings you to it’s homepage.
StarEdit Colors
StarEdit Resource
Quelex B+
This is a notepad and wordpad I created a while ago that has the color codes for text in StarEdit including the new 1.14 colors.
GUEdit StarEdit Utility
Golden Urg C Golden Urg’s Editor was a good alternative to SCM Toolkit back then. It allows some of the same things, but Uberation seems to be the same idea with more options. Might want to try something newer instead.
ISOM StarEdit Utility
Kramerboy C This is a very outdated program too. It would have a lot of errors working and often caused crashes. It was one of the first ways of doing rectangular terrain instead of the Isometric method StarEdit uses. You’ve seen many bound maps use that sort of terrain before I’m sure. SCM Draft would be the best choice for doing this sort of thing now. Definitely a classic.
MapSketch StarEdit Utility
FaRTy1billion

Submitted by newbiemapmaker

A This is similar to the Picture Mapper. It was made recently (March 2010) and allows players to take an image and easily make a StarCraft Map where the minimap looks like the image. The download link leads to StarEdit.net where there’s instructions and the download.
ProEdit 1.4.1
StarEdit Utility
Clokr_
B+ Opens and Compresses maps. Apparently most Unprotectors have trouble opening maps protected by this one. Download link takes you to it’s homepage.
SC Picture Mapper v4.0 StarEdit Utility
BannedScag B
I couldn’t get this to work on my computer (Vista 64 Bit), it’s supposed to create terrain based on a .jpg or other image. Sounds useful if you can make it work.
SCM Toolkit * StarEdit Utility
Bigblackbat C+ Not sure if this one even still works. SCM Toolkit lets you change terrain size and tilesets, among a lot of other nice features. But It is rather outdated.
TinyMap2 StarEdit Utility
FaRTy1billion B+ A map utility that reduces file size and protects the map from being edited. A more recent program than the other map protectors and compressors. The download link brings you to StarEdit.net to download it and also has instructions.
Uberation 3 StarEdit Utility
Legacy Weapon B+ Uberation was a great tool back in the day. This is a newer version which allows for features such as Compression, Player Colors, Protection, and stuff I don’t even understand :-P . Download link takes you to it’s homepage.

*Many of the older utilities will only work with older versions of Starcraft. You can download older patches in the Official Files section.
