How To Win At Starcraft II

Wouldn’t it be so easy if in 400 words I can tell you the secret to winning at Starcraft II? Of course that’s impossible, but in general, the reason one person wins a battle over another is due to one of a few reasons. Let’s examine them:

A Rush:

The most basic (and possibly boring) reason a person wins is they rush the opponent, and their opponent is not ready for it. Simply put, the first person invests his resources quickly into units, whereas the other person turtles and invests in upgrades/teching. The person is not equipped with adequate defenses and loses. Pretty simple.

A Counter-Attack:

Someome rushes, it fails, and the person counter attacks.

Resources/Macro:

All things being equal, a person with more resources will win in Starcraft II. If both players choose similar strategies, but one person has an extra base or two, that person will win since they have more resources to build units.

To out-macro your opponent, you should aim to develop your second and third bases quicker than your opponent, and if possible, prevent your opponent from building a second or third base. Sometimes it is easier to prevent/delay your opponent from expanding first and then you expand yourself. As you gather more resources, you send in a larger army to finish him off.

Better Unit Selection/Scouting:

Starcraft II has a very rock-paper-scissors sort of strategy when it comes to unit building a lot of the time. For example, mutalisks/void rays will beat marauders since maurauders can’t attack air. Hydralisks/marines will defeat mutalisks/void rays since they have better value/more firepower for the resources. Maurauders will defeat marines/hydralisks since they are more powerful.

If you adequately scout your opponent (and your opponent does not retool quickly enough), you can defeat your opponent by investing in the right units. If your opponent is a newbie, he or she may likely be dependent on one type of rush or unit. In this case, you simply invest in the unit(s) that effectively counter to win.

Out-Micro:

In the heat of the battle, better positioning/spellcasting can result in the winner. This is what often separates the elite players from good players, since this requires very good attention, focus, organization, and just quick clicking.
