Ok, before I start, I am hoping that EVERY player out there know how to recon. With protoss, observers, zealots, even shuttles can be used. Anyways, you gotta know whats coming to defend it, and this guide is gonna tell you how to do it best.
VS Terran
Marine/Medic rush: Alright if you had been setting up cannons this should be no problem, cause usually 3 hits will kill a marine thats being healed, so like 10 cannons can hold it off. I would sugest zealots though. Their 16 damage can kill a marine in 3 hits. If you had gotten the gateway flow goin early you should be fine.
Tank Push: ZEALOTS WITH LEG ENHANCEMENTS!!!! If you bring in scouts, they are gonna get wasted by the air support they usually bring.
Psi Storm is ok here but usually tanks come before templars do. Plus, the templars get wasted cause their range isn't as long as the tanks.
Drops in the peon line: I hate these, cause you gotta spot em. You SHOULD have observers all around and see them comat at you, and you can hit them with your emercency group of scouts. If they do drop, don't psi storm them unless they have already dusted your peons. Keep a DT to 2 back there if you can. If there are a TON of em, this is probably their big attack. You can stasis them with an arbiter, then attack their main base, because they won't be able to use those units again. Unfortunatly, you gotta have another arbiter ready to stasis them again, and again, and again. Its really hard to do, but if you can, its worth it! They are eventually gonna drop, just be ready for them with DTs!!!!
Golaiths Galore: These little mechanical annoyances are really a pain. Whatever you do, don't go air agaisnt them. Zealots with good legs are good agaisnt em. Psi storms are usefull too, but only when you have a lot of templars. Goons are like their eaquals, but if you are gonna use em, use hallucenation on em too. Archons can waste them also, since like 5 hits will kill one (4 if you upgraded and he didnt).
Wraiths: ARG!! I hate them. Terran can scan the area and spot you observer, then kill it. You CAN psi storm them, and try to get a few observers scattered around. If you can see em, scouts can waste em!
Battlecruisers: Terran players hate me for this. If you see a buch of stargates with towers, and a few battlecruisers, start getting dark archons! When the fleet come over, send in a bunch of hallucenated goons (so yuor archons can set up) and then steal a bc. When they kill it, steal another. Repeat. If you don't have good micro skillz, just get scouts and templars. 2 Scouts and 1 psi storm can take out a bc. They are annoying as hell if they yamato your buildings. Fortunatly they are slow as hell and they can't move outa a psi storm very well.
Nukes: OBSERVERS!!!
Alright, on any of these, if you see a science vessel just start swearing and send your scouts after it. Do NOT let them emp ya. Also never go carriers versus terran, their lockdown can stop you dead cold.
VS Zerg
6 zergling rush: This is EXTREAMLY HARD TO COUNTER. On a big map, you can usually get 2 zealots out quick enough. 1 isn't enough. 2 Cannons can also do the job. On small maps you are pretty much screwed. Tell your probes to attack. I hate when people do this to me. Just be quick. Make a pylon at 7 and a gateway at 8, then a probe, then a zealot! Then another gateway, then a zealot.
Mass Hydras: Psi storm, Lots of them. Put up some cannons just to slow them down enough so they bunch up. Psi storm. DTs work well also, but if yuo are psi storming...you get hit as well.
Cracklings: Psi storm and cannons. Maelstorm also. These bugs are annoying. don't use all out cannons cause of the stupid dark swarms.
Gardians: One word: Scouts and observers! Wait...thats 3 words....
Mutas: PSI STORM AND SCOUTS!!! I love wreaking havoc like that!!
Quick lurker rush: Cannons are the only way to stop these guys cause it takes a while to get observers. 10 cannons at the opening is a pretty good idea... Also, if you can get templars...that works too.
Ultralisks: No one uses them right but if you get swarmed by them get an arbiter, some coursairs/scouts (to chase away the overlord) and a whole bunch of zealots/goons. Psi storm is alrigth but it wont kill any of em...Maelstorm works well also.
Drops: Psi storm their overlords, and keep some DTs in your base. Although they can see them, your DTs can kill off the units real fast.
VS Protoss
Zealot rush: Hey, you can do the same thing, and you cna make another zealot in the time it takes for him to run over to your base, so you can easily counter this one.
Goons galore: Psi Storm, DTs, and suprizingly, a zealot can crush a goon. Scouts suck vs them, don't use them.
DTs: Observers and...um...scouts. If they get into your peon line you gotta use zealots though, cause they will kill your peons.
Carriers: Scouts! Just make sure your scouts are attacking the carriers and not the interceptors. Psi storm also hurts em, but it will take like 5 of em to kill it. Players usually group them up so a psi will hurt almost all of em.
I hope this guide helps you greatly, except when you are playing me. Anyways...remember always to attack with detectors!
